Half a year for HMRC – Where do business owners stand?

Many company owners won’t have noticed it pass, but 11 June marked a line in the calendar with real meaning: Tax Freedom Day.

This is the point at which the average UK taxpayer has finally earned enough to meet their annual tax obligations.

In effect, the first 162 days of 2025 were spent working not for themselves, but for the Government.

The date has been edging later each year, in 2009, it was 18 May.

This steady shift is no coincidence. It reflects a tax system quietly expanding through a combination of frozen thresholds, changing allowances and increasing rates.

A heavier load for business owners

While all taxpayers are impacted, owners and directors of limited companies face a more complex and often steeper tax landscape.
