SME growth soars as sustainability takes the spotlight

Recent research by NatWest Group on the UK’s SME sector highlights a promising continuous growth trend across the nation’s independent businesses, marking the fifth month of expansion.

The service industry and manufacturing sector are at the forefront, propelling this growth after a period of relative inactivity in manufacturing.

The NatWest SME PMI Business Activity Index, which the Group uses to track SME performance, scored 52.6 in the first quarter of 2024. A score above 50 indicates expansion, underscoring a commitment among SMEs to long-term growth rather than short-term gains. However, this research shifted its primary focus from individual sectors to the potential for future sustainability and investment.

Investment focus: Sustainability

The findings reveal that 36 per cent of SMEs consider investing in energy efficiency and sustainable practices a top priority over the next year. Eighteen per cent are planning investments in the next 12 months, with an additional 41 per cent aiming to do so within five years.

The move towards sustainability is increasingly recognised for its substantial long-term financial benefits, including tax incentives and additional funding.

Adopting sustainable and advanced working practices not only meets Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals but also enhances overall business efficiency. These practices are seen as a way to secure a solid return on investment.
